I still don’t know exactly how far this project will go.
I only know that it exists now, that it is moving forward, taking shape day by day, and looking more and more like me. FRED was not born from a perfectly prepared plan or a cold, calculated career strategy. If it had been, I would probably have started much earlier.
If I am coming to music late, I am not coming empty-handed. I am arriving with a lifetime behind me: years of watching, silence, detours, wounds, tenderness, mistakes, humour, swallowed anger, and things kept somewhere inside for a very long time.
I have always written. Words have been there since I was a child. I love their sound, their weight, their meaning, their hidden layers. I love playing with them, turning them over, dressing them differently, testing them in other forms, other turns of phrase, other landscapes. I have written for myself. I have written for others. I have written to understand, to hold on, and sometimes to answer what life itself never quite managed to put into words.
But for a long time my words remained trapped on blank pages. They existed, yes. They breathed a little. But perhaps they were missing a voice, a breath, a wider space. They were missing the possibility of leaving the page and reaching someone in another way.
Then came a meeting, conversations, a shared intuition. A project began with Ji, my artistic director, who sensed something before I even knew exactly what to do with it. She took me under her wing, not to turn me into someone else, but to help bring out what may have been waiting a long time to find its form.
There are things we carry in silence for years: anger, wounds, memories, tenderness, regrets, impulses, recurring images, sentences we never knew how to say at the right time. They stay somewhere inside us for a long while. Then one day they ask for a form. For me, that form has very often begun with words.
Before the music, there is almost always a text. A sentence that keeps insisting. An image that will not let go. An emotion looking for a way through. Then comes the voice, with its strengths and its fragilities. Then the attempts, versions, choices, failures too, surprises and discoveries. A track is not born in one click. It searches for itself, changes, sometimes resists. You have to listen to it, stay with it, give it time to become what it needs to be.
This site exists to share that journey.
Not only the finished result, not only the songs once they are completed, filed away and ready to hear. But everything around them too: the texts, the worlds, the images, the artistic choices, the doubts, the bursts of enthusiasm, the behind-the-scenes life of a project built seriously without losing its humanity.
I am not here to sell you a pose.
I am here to put down and share what I can give. Nothing more, but nothing less either. Songs, texts, images, fragments of life turned into artistic propositions. Pieces that are sometimes dark, sometimes brighter, sometimes ironic, sometimes fragile. Things that do not claim to please everyone, but that try to be sincere.
And I want you — those of you reading these lines, taking the time to care about my work, my ideas and my different worlds — to be able to take part in this journey.
Not only as distant spectators. Not only as passing listeners. But as a real presence, even a quiet one, in an adventure still being built. A song truly lives only when it meets someone. It may be written in solitude, worked on in the studio, recorded, filed, archived and protected; it only reaches its full dimension when it is received, listened to and passed through someone else’s sensitivity.
Too often we discover artists through already polished images, carefully mastered narratives and silhouettes smoothed by communication. That is not a criticism: everyone moves forward as best they can, with the codes and constraints of their time. But I do not think I quite belong to that mould.
I am not smooth. I have no desire to pretend that I am.
I come with what I am: my words, my voice, my contradictions, my history, my sometimes awkward humour, my anger, my clumsiness, my loyalties, my obsessions too. I come with the desire to make something that can stand, even imperfectly. Something that does not cheat too much. Something that might touch, make someone smile, unsettle, perhaps comfort, or simply keep someone company for a few minutes.
In this section, From Me to You, I will speak more directly.
I will talk about the FRED project, of course, but also about what creating stirs up, what it reveals, what it forces you to face. Sometimes I will talk about a song, sometimes a stage in the process, sometimes a doubt or a decision. Not to tell everything. Not to turn my life into a shop window. But to keep a human connection behind the tracks.
Because a song is never just an audio file.
It is a fragment of life that has found a form.
It is a way of holding something out to someone else without knowing exactly who will receive it, or how. And perhaps that is what moves me most in this adventure: the idea that a text born somewhere in my own solitude might one day reach someone in theirs.
So, here we are.
Welcome.
This site will be my open studio, my road journal, my place for sharing. But in a way it will also belong to an entire team without whom this project could never have taken this form.
A team that means an enormous amount to me. Not only because of what it helps me make, not only because of the songs, images, ideas, decisions or paths we build together. But because of what it brings me as a human being: trust, different points of view and sensitivities, encouragement, disagreements sometimes, momentum and presence. It makes the project bigger than me without ever taking it away from me.
Here, in these notes, there will also be FRED. Me. The man behind the songs. Speaking to you without too many detours, with his words, doubts, enthusiasm, awkwardness, anger, tenderness and the desire to keep creating.
A way of inviting you on this musical, textual and emotional journey through the many landscapes of music, writing, images and creation. A journey made of dark songs, unexpected light, intimate fragments, more ironic detours, memories, fables, cries at times, and silences too.
Nothing will be perfect. But everything will try to be true.
And if you are here, even only passing through, then this path is already a little less solitary.
